2nd period... worried !!

Post by emzjay92 »

I had surgery on the 9th Novemeber 2016, my right tube had ruptured so it had to be removed. I had my 1st period 6 weeks after surgery it lasted about 4 days, was heavy & dark then got a bit lighter bright red then just stopped. I was due on last Friday, so im 8 days late now for my 2nd period & im getting worried now as i have yet to get my period. Ive been having sharp pains in my left side, got told that may be ovulation pains but had those pains a week before i was due on so surely i should of come one instead of having more ovulation pains? Im so confused!! Im not ready to try for another baby yet, but im convinced that im pregnant! We have been using comdoms as i want my period to regulate before i went back onto a contraception but im convinced a condom split and we didnt notice i just cant seem to shake the feeling that i might be pregnant off. Is it normal for periods to be irregular ? Or even miss a period? I know that they say it can be 42 days for a cycle at times so im waiting 42 days before i take a pregnancy test just soo worried that it may all happen again i just want time before i get pregnant again...

Dear emzjay92,
I am so sorry to hear of your ongoing worries,

Your periods can take a while to get back to a rhythm that is more usual for you. I also found that my periods changed for a few months after my losses.

Periods can be delayed for a number of reasons including stress or even (as surprising as it may sound) excessive exercise or weight loss. Doctors normally consider menstrual cycles of between 23-42 days to be within normal parameters. As you have rightly said, we would advise taking a pregnancy test, however if it is negative and been 42 days since the first day of your last period, I would suggest asking your doctors to investigate further. Also, while I do not want to alarm you, if you experience any pain or unusual bleeding, please do get medical attention as soon as you can.

If you period arrives but the pain persists, I suggest keeping a pain diary noting when the pain appears, the intensity on a scale of 0-10 and anything that helps the pain eg resting, hot water bottle, paracetamol etc. Visiting your doctors with this information helps them to assess how best to manage your symptoms.

Sending much love,
Karen x
