Resolving ectopic

Post by Punkymonkey25 »

Can I join this thread please?

I'm currently undergoing expectant management of a cornual ectopic pregnancy which is apparently pretty rare!

I got my BFP early February and went for a private early scan in March. They couldn't really see much and whatever they did see didn't match with my dates so I was referred to my EPAU. Had a TVUS there and was diagnosed with a cornual ectopic.

I'd had no pain and no bleeding so they were happy for me not to have surgery. I was told that in my case they'd usually prescribe Methotrexate but given the current Covid situation, they wouldn't be doing that as it would immunocompromise me.

I've been having serial beta Hcg blood tests and my levels have gone from 5000 to 257 in about 3 weeks. I've had to attend hospital alone through it all (fully understand why).

Does anyone have any similar experiences? I'm wondering how long it will take to get to zero and when I can start trying again. Im 34 and this was my first attempt so I'm keen to start again.

Dear Punkymonkey25,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss, and you are right cornual pregnancies as very rare.

I am afraid it is difficult to predict how long it will take for your hormone levels reach non-pregnant levels. As we are all individual, it depends on factors like how high levels reached and our unique physiology. What I can say is that it can take a number of weeks and, while it can take some time, it is not as invasive a procedure as surgery. It is also encouraging that your levels are falling steadily although I appreciate that it can be a drawn out process. Also, in terms of chances of future successful pregnancies, studies do not show a significant difference between treatment routes, whether surgical, medical using methotrexate or expectant management (allowing time for the body to resolve the pregnancy itself).

Regarding conceiving again, we and many medical professionals advise waiting for two menstrual cycles. It is important to allow time for your body to recover and emotions to surface and be worked through. This is so that you have some comfort that your body is returning to its natural rhythm and you have a last menstrual period date from which to date a new pregnancy - key information in checking you are not suffering from an ectopic pregnancy in the future. The first bleed soon after surgery for ectopic pregnancy is not classed as a period as it is the body's response to falling hormone levels.

Please be kind to yourself and allow time to grieve, to heal both physically and emotionally,
We will be here for you for as long as you need,
Sending much love,
Karen x
