Contraception after ectopic pregnancy

Post by Sea Otter »

Hi,

I recently had my left fallopian tube removed due to an ectopic pregnancy caused by an incorrectly placed IUD (intra-uterine device). The doctors gave me an option to go for the implant for continued contraception right after surgery, which I accepted and had a [contraceptive] inserted while I was in the hospital.

Further reading online has revealed to me that the implant is one of the risk factors for a heightened chance for ectopic pregnancy. I was wondering if this was true and as I would not like to lose my other tube, would it be better to remove the implant instead and look for other contraception methods?

Additionally, I started having vaginal bleeding a week after the surgery which has not stopped up until now (2.5 weeks after surgery). It is very light bleeding. I am unsure if this is due to my uterus expelling the lining, the insert of the implant or if this is a normal occurrence after the surgery?

Thank you.

Dear Sea Otter,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss,
Unfortunately I am not medically trained so cannot give you specific advice on your query.
When deciding on contraceptive measures, the clinician will look at risks verses benefits when deciding with you which method is most suitable.
Progesterone Only Contraceptives (POCs), including contraceptive implants, the mini-pill or progesterone only pill, contraceptive injections and the Mirena Coil are associated with a higher incidence of ectopic pregnancy, however you may have increased health risks from taking combined oral contraceptives.
I believe with the progesterone only products, if you were to become pregnant there is a slight increased risk in it being ectopic however the implant has a very small failure rate so the chances of you becoming pregnant are minimal.

We have more information about contraception here - https://ectopic.org.uk/patients/your-bo ... pregnancy/

Please however speak to your GP who has access to your medical records and can advise you further.
Sending much love,
Karen x
