Less bleeding after methotrexate

Post by NP20+ »

Hello!
I was diagnosed with an ectopic a week ago and received an injection of methotrexate this a Tuesday. Since yesterday (Thursday) my bleeding has decreased and this morning I’ve got no bleeding at all! I’m worried this is a bad sign, surely if the injection is working I should be bleeding more than usual? Would love to hear other people’s experiences.

I should also mention that I’ve had not other side effects from the injection, sort from feeling tired.

Hi NP20+,

I am so sorry to hear you are suffering from this ectopic pregnancy and loss. It is so important to look after yourself in these early days, especially as your hCG levels are decreasing. It is usual to begin to bleed and this bleeding can last between a few days and up to 6 weeks. Your bleeding may be on the shorter side.

However, it's important to continue to have your blood monitored for decreasing levels of hCG until you are at nonpregnant levels. The Trust has written more about treatment by methotrexate on its website: https://ectopic.org.uk/patients/treatment/

Until you are at non-pregnant levels, but you will need to monitor for any increasing pain or bleeding, as these, unfortunately, can be signs of a rupture. In these cases, you will want to be sure to call 111 or be seen at the A&E.

Sending you healing thought and good wishes,

Michele
