Period returning?

Post by Archie86 »

Morning all,

Just wondered when ppl got their period back after surgery for an ectopic?

I'm 6 weeks today & was kinda hoping it would've turned up by now! I've had some cramps as if it was coming & have had lots of ewcm as a few different times in the past 3 weeks so I'm guess my body is maybe trying to ovulate but its not happening?? Who knows, second guessing everything about my body these days!

Hello Archie86,
I had surgery in November 2019 to remove my right tube. My body took ages to get up and running again. My first period wasn't until 10.5 weeks after the operation. I had been regular before the surgery, more often than not my period showed every four weeks to the day. The past few months haven't been as regular which I find difficult because of the hope each month I might be pregnant again... but my period is slowly getting back to a rhythm of normality for me. I'm relearning my body... 🙂
Hopefully your body will give you an idea of what's going on soon.. Xx

Hi Archie86,

I'm sorry to hear you've suffered this ectopic pregnancy and loss. It can leave us with so many questions, and I will do my best to help. In regards to resuming a period, there can be considerable variation between women. Your periods can take a while to re-establish and they can re-start anything between two and ten weeks after treatment. Most women find that their period arrives sometime around week six or seven after surgery, and at some time in the four weeks after their hCG levels have fallen to 0 if treated with Methotrexate.

It may be the case that your period will take a bit longer to return, and even then, it may not be on the same schedule as before. It might be heavier or lighter and it may be more painful than normal. The period after that is usually more like your normal pattern. However, although there is no medical reason for it, women do very often report some irregularity to their cycle for several months after an ectopic pregnancy.

Broadly speaking, doctors consider menstrual (period) cycles of between 23 to 42 days to be within normal parameters. If the first day of your last period was more than 42 days ago, make an appointment with your doctor to discuss the possible reasons for this.

With good wishes,

Michele

Thank you both for your replies. I guess its just a waiting game! No sign still. I bleed for around a week after my surgery, so I'll count from there & keep an eye on things. Here's hoping it shows its face soon!! X

Hi Archie

I’m sorry for your loss.

I had an operation, left tube removed, nearly 5 weeks ago. I bled for around 5/7 days after my operation and then started taking my contraceptive pill I can’t go through this again.

I have a period tracker app that told me my period was due this week so I stopped taking the pill 3 days ago and apparently my period is 1 day overdue. I’m very anxious and nervous and wanted to know if it’s normal to be late? Do I just stay off the pill until the period comes?

Dear Snowy_19,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss,
Unfortunately I am not medically trained so cannot give you specific advice on your query.
It all depends upon what pill you are on. The combined oral contraceptive pill then you usually take the pill for 21 days, have a break and then start taking the pill again after 7 days. During this time you should have a withdrawal bleed, much like a period. If you do not have this bleed and there is a chance you could be pregnant, take a pregnancy test and speak to your GP. It may take a few days for your withdrawal bleed to start once you have stopped the pill, but if you don't have a bleed at all, again speak to your GP. Here is some more information on the combined oral contraceptive

If you are taking the progesterone only contraceptive pill, you should take the pill continuously and not stop it. A lot of women will not have periods with the progesterone only pill, that is one of the advantages of taking it. Some ladies continue to have periods, some ladies occasionally experience spotting. So if you are on this type of pill it is normal for you not to experience a period but you should not stop taking it as this will stop it from working and therefore increase your chance of pregnancy. Here is some more information on the progesterone only pill
https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/contracep ... ogen-only/

I would advise speaking to your GP or family planning nurse about your queries who will know what pill you are taking and you past medical history and will be able to advise you correctly.
Sending much love,
Karen x
