Brown discharge 3 months after ectopic (treated with MTX)

Post by Katejones32 »

Hey 👋🏻

I experienced an ectopic pregnancy in August. I was treated with MTX and I reached zero on the 14th of September. I bled throughout most of the process. I continued to bleed afterwards and then stopped for about a week. I’ve just finished my first period. I’ve continued to have brown discharge. Is this normal? I’m assuming it’s old blood. I thought my body was finally getting back to normal but this has confused me. If you’ve had a similar experience or have any idea if this is ok I would appreciate advice. Thank you x

Hi katejones32, I’m so sorry that you’ve experienced an ectopic. I too had an ectopic pregnancy in February 2020, but it was managed conservatively (so not MTX). I continued to bleed brown discharge (especially around ovulation) on and off until June, and my periods would tail off with several days of brown discharge. They seem to be back to normal now. I hope that is helpful to know that it seems to take our bodies several months to recover. Love Jen xxx

Hi jen,

Thank you so much for your reply. It’s reassuring to know that what I’m experiencing is “normal” for others too. I can now understand why they recommend waiting for a few months after the ectopic to ttc. Our bodies have been through a lot. Hope you’re ok xx

Dear Katejones32,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss,
Many women experience spotting and discharge for a while following ectopic pregnancy and it can take a few months for periods to settle into a rhythm that is more normal for us.
Having said this though, if the discharge continues or if you notice that it is offensive smelling or you develop fevers, I would talk to a medical professional just to be on the safe side as these symptoms can be signs of infection.

Sending much love,
Karen x
