How many weeks are you?

Post by Kelsie »

I went to work as normal on Tuesday morning, within an hour I was having stomach pains which meant I couldn’t sit. I left work, called a friend to pick me up, she saw the state I was in and drove me to A&E.

Over the next few hours I would be told I was pregnant and that it was ectopic. Honestly the pregnancy was news to me. I had a coil fitted and hadn’t missed a period. I had bleed for about two weeks which was strange, however with a coil nothing seems to be normal. I didn’t think much of it.

However numerous of the healthcare professionals kept asking how many weeks was I? I wasn’t pregnant as far as I was aware. I didn’t know! To then be in emergency surgery within 6 hours of going to A&E, it was all a bit of a shock. Now minus a right tube and feeling very sore, that question of “how many weeks?” still confuses me.

I had no idea really what an ectopic pregnancy was and it took someone to spell it out to me before I understood what was happening. How is it that something that is so common is not talked about more?! How is it that this isn’t talked about in schools during sex education? How did I not know about this until I was in the situation myself?! And why did they keep asking how many weeks I was? The answer they got was “I found out this morning!”

All the sites talk about people who have been trying for kids and having ectopic pregnancies and the heart break of the loss. I feel no loss as I haven’t lost anything (just a tube, but hey we have two right?!). But I’m upset that this has sprung out of nowhere into my life and changed everything without really changing anything.

How many weeks? Well I suppose it was at least 6 weeks, but you’re the medical professionals, you tell me. As far as I am concerned I was pregnant for about 4 hours on Tuesday.

Dear Kelsie,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy. From your own words I can imagine what a frightening experience this was and I am sorry you have had to go through this.
I am sorry you felt overly questioned, I can imagine how frustrating this was when you didn't have the answers. Unfortunately I am not medically trained so cannot comment as to why they kept asking you, I can only guess that they were trying to get a full picture as the information helps decide which treatment option is best as there are a few methods of treatment for ectopic pregnancy.

We agree about lack of information regarding ectopic pregnancy and as well as providing support to ladies who have experienced ectopic pregnancy, we also strive to provide information on awareness.

You may not feel the emotional loss, but you have still had to undergo surgery and we advise that you should take it very easily for about six weeks after surgery. Your body will be using its energies to heal internally. It is normal to feel physically and emotionally exhausted during this time and please do be kind to yourself. Recovery can take time and some days will be better than others, one day you maybe ok and the next you maybe in discomfort or more emotional. This is perfectly usual and the healing process will go back and forth in this way for however long you need. It is important to listen to your body's signals and pain and feeling tired are your body's signs to tell you to rest. We suggest keeping a healthy balanced diet, drinking lots of water and resting. Once your wounds have healed, very gentle exercise such as a short walk can help, but please do take this slowly.

We will be here for you for as long as you need. We have specific Preparing for your Next Pregnancy boards for you to look at in the future of needed.
Sending much love,
Karen x
