Diazepam/Benzodiazepines

Post by MrsB19 »

Hi, I have previously had 2 ruptured ectopic pregnancies. At time I was taking Diazepam, a Benzodiazepine medication.
Has anyone else on here been taking any Benzodiazepine?

I have discovered that there is a strong link of Benzodiazepines and ectopic pregnancy!

Dear MrsB19,The
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancies and losses. To experience one loss is difficult, to deal with multiple losses is heartbreaking and my heart truly goes out to you.
I'll start by stating, I am not medically trained and so would direct any questions about current medication to your GP or medical team.
From researching this, it looks as though this information has come from one research study which has not been replicated. Although it has a large number of participants, The information was gained from medical notes which may alter the data.
There are also many increased risk factors for ectopic pregnancy, including smoking, pelvic inflammatory disease or a history of sexually transmitted infection. It is not clear how well these were accounted for in the study and alcohol intake wasn't even reviewed.
It is not proven, but the authors of the study speculate that benzodiazepines could impact passage of the egg through the fallopian tube by promoting relaxation of smooth muscles which move the egg along, but this is speculation.

Although there is an increased risk, I would be reluctant to rely on the headlines reported about the study and I would certainly discuss with your medical team.

Sending much love,
Karen x
