What to expect?

Post by Tea_me_up »

OH and I have been unsuccessfully TTC for 9 years. First IVF got cancelled in 2020 (thanks, Covid) and second one was not successful. We only had one viable embryo and sadly it did not take. Needless to say testing positive on a pregnancy test was unexpected and we were deliriously happy (I was a little apprehensive tbh, almost not believing it could be happening). Anyway people told me the spotting was all normal until I had a bright red discharge on the Friday and rang my GP. Ended up with a scan later that day to be told it was ectopic. Because everything seemed stable it is being expectantly managed, and my hcg levels are dropping. I do have constant discharge of a brown colour, every time I wipe. Sometimes it is heavier but then it just goes to back to spotting, but always there. Is this normal? It's hard to find an answer anywhere unless there's medical / surgery involved. Should I be expecting a 'miscarriage' bleed at some point? (It's almost a week since diagnosis of ectopic).

I'm off work this week (amazing bosses) but am trying to work out when to go back. We have really grim, shared toilets at work and I don't want to be there experiencing a nightmare period, but if it's going to continue being this constant yet light brown then I think I can manage. Also not sure about exercise? Again, lots of post - surgery advice.

Any advice appreciated.

Also this was in my right tube, but I feel like I have ovulation pain in my left ovary. Is that normal? It's not pain as such, just the discomfort I usually get before ovulation.

Dear Tea_me_up,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and losses, especially after all you have been through and I am sorry you are having to go through this.
Your bleeding and pain levels sound normal for this stage. As I am not medically trained and pain is so subjective, I do always advise speaking though any concerns with your medical team. This should be done urgently with any significantly worsening pain or bleeding.
We have more information about treatment with expectant management on our website and additional information on bleeding which I have included in the link below.

With regards to work, many women find they have to take longer off to deal with the emotional impact of ectopic pregnancy. Be kind to yourself and allow time to recover both physically and emotionally. You can speak to your doctor to arrange this if needed.
We will be here for you for as long as you need,
Sending much love,
Karen x
