HSG/ Hysterosalpingo-Constrast Sonography (HyCoSy)

Post by CCO123 »

Hello,
I wanted to ask for advice about this procedure...
Loooong story short: had my mmc Oct 17, surgical managed. Retained product and a 2d surgery as was septic.
Tried again in 2018 and on 3rd cycle we got a bfp which turned out to be ectopic, medically treated.
I know that Risk factors for an ectopic include: pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, use of an intrauterine device (IUD), previous exposure to DES, tubal surgery, intrauterine surgery (e.g. D&C), smoking, previous ectopic pregnancy, endometriosis, and tubal ligation."

I had none except the intrauterine surgeries. I do know it might be just bad luck. However
as I didn't have the surgery to remove the tube I am worried that it might happen again.

I would like to have the test dye private (as no gp would refer me at this point even if we are a year in the ttc process). I know it might come up normal and still I could end up with another ectopic/mc but I can't go through all I've been again.

For anyone with any advice about this - do you think is worth doing?

Thank you

Dear CCO123,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and losses,
Trying to conceive again can be a challenging time for couples especially after experiencing loss. I will do my best to help.
While generally it is possible to conceive after an ectopic pregnancy, the amount of time it takes varies from couple to couple. Factors include age, general health, reproductive health and how often you have sex, among other things.
I wish I could give more precise information, but as I do not have access to your and your partner's medical records, it is difficult for me to provide specific details. Generally, we and many healthcare professionals advise keeping a healthy balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight and abstaining from alcohol and smoking.
Importantly, help is available if conceiving naturally has not yet been successful after some time trying - and the EPT advises that women under 35 should seek medical advice following 12 months trying to conceive and those over 35 should seek advice after 6 months. Unfortunately I am not medically trained so cannot give you specific advice on your question regarding future tests, so would advise discussing this with your GP.
We have more information on testing here
https://www.ectopic.org.uk/patients/trying-to-conceive/

It is normal to feel anxious about the future. We experience a mix of emotions from wanting to try again to being petrified of what may lie ahead. We never forget but we can learn to accept what happened. It is a slow process that might be weeks or months ahead. In time, we can get to a place where we feel comfortable trying again. When this is, is individual for each person. There is no timeframe for recovery, take each day as it comes.
Importantly early scans avail. As soon as you know you are pregnant, contact your local EPU to inform them and book in for an early scan at around six weeks. Remind them of your previous ectopic pregnancy. This self refer route is the best route in our view. Hopefully you will have some comfort to know you are under the radar of medical professionals right away.
As a gentle reminder regarding conceiving again, we and many medical professionals advise waiting for two menstrual cycles. It is important to allow time for your body to recover and emotions to surface and be worked through. This is so that you have some comfort that your body is returning to its natural rhythm and you have a last menstrual period date from which to date a new pregnancy - key information in checking you are not suffering from an ectopic pregnancy in the future. The first bleed soon after surgery for ectopic pregnancy is not classed as a period as it is the body's response to falling hormone levels.

Making the decision to begin trying to conceive is an emotional rollercoaster compounded by our sad loss. Again, you are not alone. We here emotional support whenever you need us. There is a specific TTC board you can look at too whenever feel ready.

Sending much love,
Karen x

Until a few months ago I would have said definitely do it, even if it means paying privately.

I had a late loss at 20 weeks last year which was also quite complicated so my dr arranged a hycosy and 3D-sis to check all was ok. I also had genetic testing and some other tests. All came back clear. Great or so I thought. I'm now 1 week post emergency surgery for an ectopic as I ruptured 10 days after the mtx injection.

I've had a chat with my hospital's reproductive medicine unit (I can't get pregnant without help as I don't ovulate without medical intervention) and we've agreed that we will not do another hycosy as I'm now higher risk for ectopic now that I've had one and we've agreed that I'll chat to a specialist re exploring ivf.

In summary, for me I will not be doing it, but I've had tests done previously. They could be helpful to you re ruling things out. Just be prepared that things can still go very wrong even if things come back clear.

Good luck
