Flying after emergency surgery for ectopic and travel insurance

Post by Geriatricwoman »

Hi All,

I am flying soon to the USA from the UK. I am only flying as my Grandma is dying. I will be about 5.5 weeks post emergency surgery. I have a direct flight that is 9.5 hours. I have asked for wheelchair assistance and I am only taking a carry-on. I only live about 20min from the airport and my uncle will be picking me up in Tampa. I still am not back energy wise and many ways. I will ask for support putting my carry- on up in the cabin bins. I would not be flying if it was not for my Grandma being so ill.

I bought travel insurance last July for a year. Do I need to tell my insurance about my emergency surgery and ectopic pregnancy? Has anyone else been through this and what did you say? How did your insurance respond?

I asked in hospital and the doctor said I could travel 2 weeks after surgery.... I don't know what planet he was on as it has been a long recovery.

Dear Geriatricwoman,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss and the sad news of your grandma, you have an awful lot to contend with right now and I am sending virtual hugs.
I am not a travel health expert but I would certainly tell your insurance company about your recent surgery so they are aware. It is better to be on the safe side as if anything did happen and you hadn't told them, it could invalidate your insurance.
Please be kind to yourself and allow time to grieve,to heal both physically and emotionally. Generally speaking, should take it very easy for about six weeks after surgery. Your body will be using its energies to heal internally. It is normal to feel physically and emotionally exhausted during this time so please do be kind to yourself. Recovery can take time and some days will be better than others. One day you may be okay and the next you may be in discomfort or more emotional. This is perfectly usual and the healing process will go back and forth in this way for however long you need. It is important to listen to your body signals. Pain and feeling tired are your body signals to tell you to rest. We suggest keeping a healthy diet drinking lots of water and resting.

We will be here for you for as long as you need,
Sending much love,
Karen x
