Pain and bloating
Pain and bloating
I underwent emergency salpingectomy 31/10/23 for ruptured ectopic. 14 days ago I had my first and quite painful period and over the past 7-10 days I have had bloating, pelvic pain, changes to vaginal discharge, pain on micturition and general vaginal discomfort. I treated for thrush with pessary and cream which has helped with the discharge but all my other symptoms remain. Is this all due to adhesions and healing process etc or should I get myself checked over? I haven’t got a fever but I’m generally fatigued. Is this all normal?

Re: Pain and bloating
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy loss,
It is still very early in your recovery journey and it is possible that you are doing to much too soon. If you are concerned about your symptoms however, I would advise seeking medical advice. although you mention that you do not have fevers, having unusual vaginal discharge, discomfort could be signs of infection, pain in micturition may also be a sign of a UTI.
Your body needs time to heal from your surgery which is in itself a gruelling task. You have also had to process the loss of your baby and been through an immense rollercoaster of emotions - all of this will take time to come to terms with.
You should take it very easily for about six weeks after surgery. Your body will be using its energies to heal internally. It is normal to feel physically and emotionally exhausted during this time and please do be kind to yourself. Recovery can take time and some days will be better than others, one day you maybe ok and the next you maybe in discomfort or more emotional. This is perfectly usual and the healing process will go back and forth in this way for however long you need. It is important to listen to your body's signals and pain and feeling tired are your body's signs to tell you to rest. We suggest keeping a healthy balanced diet, drinking lots of water and resting. Once your wounds have healed, very gentle exercise such as a short walk can help, but please do take this slowly.
If you need further time, please speak to your GP about a further fit note. Some people need to take up to six weeks off, this is completely normal. If you feel you cannot take any further time off, I would certainly speak to your employer about a phased return or other options such a more catch up slots during the day. Being a NP is physically and emotionally draining and you won't be doing the best you can for your patients if you are not looking after yourself. If work aren't supporting you, and you are in the UK and a member of the RCN, you could always contact them for advice too.
Above all, look after yourself and allow time to grieve and heal both physically and emotionally.
Sending much love,
Karen x

Per our Trust policy we do not allow links to other websites. We are also having lots of issues with Spam posts at the moment and I'm afraid of you continue to post a link, we will need to take additional steps. We try extremely hard to make these boards a safe space with the most up to date and medically advised information as well as support. As we do not have the resources to review linked websites, we ask that users do not link to external sites. I hope you understand and continue to use our forums in a safe manner.
Thank you,
