Hike towards Healing - Welcome and Resources

A very warm welcome and thank you so much for signing up and joining our Hike toward Healing. The Hike will take place on 12th April 2025

We are so grateful to have you on our team raising vital funds and awareness, while connecting with others who have experienced ectopic pregnancy.

Helvellyn Hike toward Healing

When partnering with Take a Hike for our second in-person EPT walk, we feel strongly that the event will not only hold space for personal reflection but also allow connection with others who have experienced similar.

Ben and Gareth of Take a Hike shared this vision and have personalised a route for our EPT group up and around Helvellyn which holds breath-taking views and tells a story of strength through adversity.

Helvellyn is one of the most iconic mountains in England’s Lake District, famed for its dramatic ridges, sweeping views, and varied trails. Standing at 950 meters (3,117 feet), it’s the third-highest peak in the Lake District and offers a thrilling challenge for hikers of all levels.  From the summit, you’ll experience some of the most spectacular views in the Lake District, stretching across Ullswater, Thirlmere, and as far as the Scottish hills on a clear day. The panorama from the top is well worth the effort!

Hike Route

The route is mainly accessible mountain paths, with no technical terrain to speak of, which can be covered by anyone with a reasonable level of base fitness. Take A Hike ensure people stick together and we mange the group to accommodate all abilities.

This is a breath-taking challenge hike that introduces people to the mountains and their potential Wainwright journey in an enjoyable and engaging way.  Starting out in Glenridding, we head out towards the long, gradual lead in towards the breath-taking Grisdale Tarn. This beautiful valley is a very gradual climb which serves as a good warm up for the day.  Upon reaching the tarn, we take a right turn to head up Dollywaggon Pike, the first of four Wainrights on our route. This relatively short, steep pull sees us gain most of our height for the day.

Once passing Dollywaggon Pike, we move on towards Nethermost Pike (Wainwright number two) and then on to our main goal of Helvellyn itself.  We pause for lunch and to take in the views here. Helvellyn has one of the most stunning views in Lakeland as it looks across Striding Edge towards Ullswater to the East, and towards the bulk of the Lake District mountains to the West.

Refreshed, we start again towards Whiteside, our final Wainwright, before a gradual descent back to Glendridding along another beautiful valley. We will finish back at Glenridding Village Hall for refreshments and time to celebrate our achievement.

Meet your EPT Hike towards Healing team

We are proud to be partnering with Ben and Gareth of Take a Hike UK for this inperson challenge. Ben and Gareth are both experienced hikers and provide hiking experiences, fundraising events, and team building days for individuals, charities and corporate groups with a focus on physical and emotional wellbeing. The two met while working for a walking and mental health charity in event planning and delivery and found a mutual desire to continue the work of helping people, whoever they are, to discover the physical and emotional health benefits of walking and being in nature. They have spent many hours in the mountains and moors delivering charity fundraising events, public outdoor experiences and corporate wellbeing/team building days. Both are experienced walking guides and are fully First Aid trained.

Joining them, is our very own Fundraising Coordinator, Jill, to provide some encouragement and motivation along the way.

Ben

After almost twenty years as a project manager for branding and design companies, Ben turned his attention to his sporting interests and now works for himself as a Sports Therapist and Hiking Guide. He is regularly found in the mountainous regions of the UK, sleeping in his van to get “just another peak in before sunset.” He’s a keen cyclist and has been a key committee member of Blaydon Cycle Club, planning and delivering group events for its members.

Gareth

With a degree in Sport & Exercise Development and other health-related qualifications, Gareth currently works, by day, as a driving instructor and for Take A Hike at all other times. As he spends the majority of his day sitting in the car, he’s always keen to get moving when not at work by heading for long walks or to the gym. Alongside work for Take A Hike, Gareth plans and leads walks for a local community hiking group of over 1000 members.

Jill

Jill guides and coordinates The EPT’s fundraisers and is delighted to be part of our inaugural in person EPT walk.

Jill has experienced ectopic pregnancy and historically used The EPT’s website and helpline support. As a result, she sought to help the Trust and has herself participated in fundraising by taking part in 5k, 10k and half marathon runs and trialed the EPT1000 challenge before its launch in 2017.  Jill values her fundraising activities for the Trust for assisting her recovery process. As many fundraisers also say, Jill found that the training and her achievements gave her renewed focus and determination and continues to love being in the outdoors running, hiking and fell walking.
