Rachel Small – Chair of The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust
Rachel joins us with a wealth of experience in early pregnancy care. She is a registered nurse, midwife and sonographer with 30 years’ experience. Having recently been chair of the Association of Early Pregnancy Units, she demonstrates a strong dedication to our values such as providing compassionate care, improving awareness of ectopic pregnancy, and advocating for improved care and support for those affected by this condition. We are excited to benefit from Rachel’s expertise as she leads us forward.
Commenting on her appointment, Rachel said:
“Having seen the impact The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust has on those navigating the heartbreak of ectopic pregnancy loss, I feel deeply honoured to take on this role. Ectopic pregnancy remains a leading cause of maternal death in early pregnancy, with MBRRACE-UK 2024 recently reporting yet another increase. These figures are a sobering reminder of the critical need for awareness, timely diagnosis, and compassionate care.
“The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust stands as a vital lifeline for individuals and families facing these devastating experiences. Its work in providing trusted information, emotional support, and advocacy for improved care is indispensable. This is about more than delivering resources; it’s about ensuring that no one affected by ectopic pregnancy feels alone. Together, we can continue to build a supportive community that offers hope and understanding to those who need it most.”
Amara Bello – Trustee of The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust
We are pleased to welcome Amara, whose background in clinical leadership and as a GP will strengthen our efforts to expand our reach and impact.
Amara shared:
“The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust’s Vision resonates with my belief that no woman or pregnant person should suffer due to a lack of knowledge or timely intervention. I am passionate about the Trust’s commitment to ensuring early diagnosis and treatment options, as well as providing comprehensive support to those affected by early pregnancy loss. I believe that fostering a compassionate community is essential for healing, and I am dedicated to creating spaces where individuals feel seen and supported.
I am excited about the opportunity to work alongside our new chair and fellow trustees to enhance the visibility and impact of The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust. I am committed to furthering education, promoting awareness, and supporting research into ectopic pregnancy. Together, I believe we can make significant strides in changing perceptions and improving outcomes for those affected.”
Looking forward
These new appointments come at a pivotal time as we continue to drive forward with our Think Ectopic campaign, aimed at raising awareness and improving early diagnosis of ectopic pregnancies. This campaign plays a critical role in educating the public and healthcare professionals about the signs and risks associated with ectopic pregnancy, ensuring that more lives can be saved through timely intervention. With Rachel and Amara on board, we are confident in our ability to continue to provide life-changing support while striving for greater awareness and understanding of ectopic pregnancy.
Munira Oza, Chief Executive of The Ectopic Pregnancy says:
“I am delighted to welcome Rachel to the Chair role and Amara joining us as trustee.
“Throughout her career so far, Rachel’s commitment to improving early pregnancy care shines through. Whether driving change in her daily responsibilities as clinical matron at her hospital or dedication through roles with the Association of Early Pregnancy Units, she never loses sight of making care the best it can be – for both patients and clinicians.
“Amara brings a wealth of experience in leadership. Through her responsibilities both in clinical management roles and as a GP, she consistently demonstrates her deep commitment to safety, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
“It is a privilege to have Rachel and Amara on our Board and I look forward to working with them to build on our services and campaigns, like Think Ectopic.
“Together, we will work towards our vision – that no-one should lose their life to an ectopic pregnancy and that anyone experiencing this traumatic condition should have the highest level of information and support.”
