The long-running BBC UK medical drama series Casualty features an episode involving an ectopic pregnancy. In preparation for this storyline, the show’s writers asked The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust to review selected scenes for accuracy. We reviewed specific lines in the script, provided feedback, and suggested amendments.
Airing since September 1986, Casualty delves into the professional and personal lives of the staff, paramedics, and patients at the busy Accident and Emergency department of the fictional Holby City Hospital. With a viewership of around 3.9 million per episode (source: Digital Spy), the show has a significant impact on raising awareness and sparking crucial conversations about various medical conditions, including ectopic pregnancy.
We extend our thanks to the BBC and the Casualty team for their dedication to presenting storylines that bring visibility to important health issues such as ectopic pregnancy.
This story is aired within Season 38, Episode 35. While we reviewed certain scenes, we did not have sight of the entire script. Please be aware that there are scenes involving graphic depictions of other surgery (not of the ectopic pregnancy). The episode also covers considerable content related to other characters’ pregnancies too. In addition, while it is a fictionalised account, there are references to clinical terminology including symptoms and treatment.
For many of us, the episode may bring back difficult memories and so please consider carefully whether you wish to watch. Our support services are here for you.
