Stylist magazine is helping to shine a light on ectopic pregnancy

Abi’s story in Stylist is a powerful reminder that ectopic pregnancy is not just a medical emergency, but can often carry far-reaching emotional impacts. She recounts how her initial joy at a positive pregnancy test turned into devastation when she was rushed for emergency surgery:

“The diagnosis led to emergency surgery and the loss of not just a pregnancy but a dream, a future, and potentially my fertility.”

While grateful for the life-saving care she received, Abi highlights the lack of follow-up support and the feeling of isolation that followed:

Yet, despite the devastating impact ectopic pregnancy and other forms of pregnancy loss have on our physical and mental wellbeing, support is often absent.”

This variation in emotional care is, unfortunately, a common experience – some are able to gather good support, but others are sadly lacking.

A call for change

The article also sheds light on the broader issues within early pregnancy care. Rachel Small, a lead midwife specialising in early pregnancy and Chair of The EPT, emphasises the need for better funding and training:

“Currently, only a handful of hospitals in the UK offer 24/7 access to Early Pregnancy Units. Government investment is desperately needed to provide round-the-clock early pregnancy care.”

This call for investment and training is vital to ensure no one feels abandoned during such a critical time.

Highlighting the Work of The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust

In the article, Munira Oza, Chief Executive of The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust, speaks about the gaps in recognising and addressing early pregnancy loss:

“Currently, pregnancy losses prior to 24 weeks gestation are not formally registered. There is no official record of early pregnancy losses, and that means there is no centralised data on the scale of these losses.”

The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust works tirelessly to support those affected by ectopic pregnancy, offering resources, a listening ear, and advocacy for systemic change.

Why Stories Like This Matter

Abi’s story and Stylist’s coverage are vital steps toward raising awareness surrounding ectopic pregnancy loss. Open conversations about ectopic pregnancy can help those affected feel less alone and drive meaningful change.

At The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust, we believe in the power of storytelling to connect and heal. Articles like this not only provide a voice to those affected, but also amplify the urgent need for awareness and action.
