The EPT Great North Run team 2024

04 Sep 2024 | By Kerri

Our incredible Great North Run team have trained through the unpredictable Summer weather to get to the start line on Sunday 8 September and we cannot thank them enough for their commitment and generosity in choosing to support The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust.

With each runner having their own personal reasons for taking part, we hope that when they put on their EPT tops on the 8 September and make their way to the start line, it will serve as a powerful reminder that they have an entire community supporting them with every step that they take.

You can watch coverage of the Great North Run-on BBC One from 10am (UK time) on Sunday 8 September.

Meet the team

Meet our team for The Great North Run 2024 and find out how you can follow their epic journeys, Sunday 8 September!

George

As a couple, my wife and I have supported the charity since we lost our baby to an ectopic pregnancy in 2015. I hadn’t heard of an ectopic pregnancy before so trying to process what had happened, the loss of a baby, and coming very close to losing my wife, was overwhelming. The EPT took some of that stress away with reliable information on their website.

Last year I had the opportunity to say thank you in London, crossing that finish line was emotional on so many levels. The next race I wanted to complete was the Great North Run and there is no other shirt I can see myself wearing as proudly as The EPT one. Being a part of Team EPT is special. Knowing that while we have all been training for this day miles apart, but will all run the same route through Newcastle, is quite symbolic – we all have our own reasons for running, but on 8 September our paths will meet in a united show of support, understanding and community. I also get to run alongside my childhood friend and training buddy, Dave, adding an extra level!

If you would like to read more about George’s journey, you can on his fundraising page

Dave

A friend of mine, George, and his wife Kerri were affected by an ectopic pregnancy a few years ago and have since been involved in fundraising for The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust. In 2020 George took on the virtual London Marathon and I joined him for the last few miles of his journey. I was impressed (I thought he was mad actually!!) that he did so with only a month’s training under his belt and no previous running experience.

I have since taken on the London Marathon myself for The EPT, and then the opportunity for myself and George to run The Great North Run presented itself. I am looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere in Newcastle alongside the rest of The EPT team.

Danni

In 2016 I had my first ectopic pregnancy. Followed by another in 2020. The Ectopic Pregnancy trust has helped me immensely with support, information and guidance over the years and through their social media channels are still there for me in their challenge and running groups. It feels like extended family 💜.

Since then, I have been raising awareness of ectopic pregnancies and funds for The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust.

I completed my first Great North Run last year in 2023 and what an experience it was. I never imagined I’d ever be able to run a half marathon but it’s definitely true what everyone says. The atmosphere is electric and gives you the boost you need!

Which brings me to now….

After saying I wouldn’t do it again, within a month I was emailing Jill asking for a place to run again in 2024 and here we are – but this time it’s a little more special as I’m running with my sister for The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust 💜 so here we go 13.1 miles to raise more awareness and money to say Thank You to those who supported me 💜

If you’re thinking about signing up next year do it – I promise if I can do it so can you!

Katy

I am so happy to be representing The EPT at the Great North Run this year. Unfortunately, I’ve had two ruptured ectopic pregnancies and throughout both experiences I felt like The EPT volunteers and other amazing women in the forums were right there holding my hand.

It’s going to be a really emotional day – shouting from the rooftops about this incredible charity, marking my own journey of pregnancy losses and infertility, and trying to give some hope to those who are still in the depths of their grief as my gorgeous baby boy waits for me at the finish line – something that after losing both of my Fallopian tubes I feared was never going to be possible.

Good luck to all of the runners and thank you to The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust for the opportunity to represent you at this fantastic event!

Sian

I started running following my ectopic pregnancy back in 2017.
I needed something to help with my grief and emotions. I found running helped me process my ectopic pregnancy and on many runs I just cried. I was fortunate I had a wonderful supportive family which included my husband and parents. I struggled so much and I know how concerned they were but it took me a long time to find myself again.
There was no question about it, once I found you guys at The EPT especially Kerri, I knew I had found my team. You welcomed me with open arms and listened to me, guided me and answered my questions. I always wanted to give back. I participated in the first 80 in 1 challenge back in 2020 and it went from there.
I just want to help others access The EPT and have the resources that I had when I went through my ectopic pregnancy.

Ben

This is my fifth GNR and first time in a while getting through the ballot having ran for the amazing EPT charity in the previous two years.

I have chosen to continue to support The EPT as they have been a great deal of support to Mary and I since we had our ectopic pregnancy, before that day I hadn’t heard of this.

We will continue to raise awareness for this wonderful charity.

Mary

I am running the Great North Run for our little miracle who we lost to an ectopic pregnancy in 2018.  Running has helped me so much through multiple pregnancy losses as a way to find the strength each day to wake up with the sunrise and pop my trainers on.  The EPT have supported Ben and I through so much and it is an honour to be able to run for such a wonderful charity and continue to raise awareness.

We wish our Great North Run 2024 team the very best of luck on Sunday. The generosity of our fundraisers and donors ensures that the charity can continue it’s vital work at no cost to those who need our support and resources.
