Kristina’s Story

In 2020, in the midst of Covid lockdowns, my husband and I were told that we were experiencing an ectopic pregnancy. After going through all the emotions and excitement of getting our first positive pregnancy test, our world shattered when I sadly had to have emergency surgery and lost one of my Fallopian tubes as a result. Due to the Covid restrictions, I had to go through the whole thing alone in hospital. The EPT was such a support during those dark days. Having no children at this point, I was so worried that I would never get the children we longed for, and I had so many questions.

Fast forward to 2025, we now have two beautiful children (which we are eternally grateful for), and I knew it was time I wanted to give something back to the EPT. When I contacted Kerri (EPT fundraising coordinator) about running the Great North Run, I could barely run 1 mile, never mind 13.1 miles! I had 12 weeks to prepare, which I knew would be hard work, but it was hard work I was prepared to do to raise money for such a vital charity.

On the start line that day, despite being surrounded by thousands of people, I felt the same loneliness I felt in hospital in 2020. I was filled with emotion and holding back the tears. However, a few kilometres in I saw the EPT support team proudly wearing their T-shirts, cheering me on, and I even got a big cuddle! All the loneliness disappeared and I was given an extra boost to get to the finish line. From that moment, I felt confident in my ability. I loved the day so much that I’ve joined the ballot to do it all again next year!

I hope people read my story and know that even after having an ectopic pregnancy and experiencing your darkest days, there can be light at the end of the tunnel. And The EPT will guide and support you every step of the way.

Thank you so much, Kristina, for sharing your story and taking on the iconic Great North Run. Kristina crossed the finish line with an incredible time of 2:27:14 and, at the time of writing, has raised £600 for The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust. We are so proud of her strength, determination, and the way she continues to shine a light for others who have experienced ectopic pregnancy.

If Kristina has inspired you to take on a challenge of your own and support our work, we’d love to hear from you. Visit our fundraising page, or get in touch with our Fundraising and Campaigns Co-ordinator, Kerri, who’s always happy to help and guide you: kerri@ectopic.org.uk
