We are pleased to announce that the College of Paramedics has confirmed support for our Think Ectopic campaign.
The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust has developed an ectopic pregnancy biocard in collaboration with healthcare professionals from University Hospitals Birmingham, Aberdeen Centre for Women’s Health Research/Aberdeen Maternity Hospital, and NHS 111/Northwest London Integrated Urgent Care provided by London Central West Unscheduled Care Collaborative (LCW).
The biocard, alongside additional resources, provides vital reminders for emergency and frontline healthcare professionals about the symptoms of ectopic pregnancy and the urgent actions required to ensure patient safety. These tools also support clinical handovers and enhance patient safety netting practices.
Paramedics can be the first point of contact for individuals experiencing symptoms of
ectopic pregnancy, particularly in emergency situations. This makes awareness among paramedics and their swift action critical. One of the MBRRACE-UK 2024’s recommendations specifically refers to paramedic care and states that ambulance service risk categorisation should be reviewed to ensure that “999 calls regarding women who are pregnant, recently pregnant or have the potential to be pregnant are appropriately managed, which may include early navigation and assessment.” The recommendation further states that there is the need to ensure that “repeated calls and calls made by minors are escalated to enable a rapid response by appropriately trained paramedics.”
Helen Beaumont-Waters from the College of Paramedics, commented:
Paramedics play a vital role in early recognition and response to medical emergencies, including ectopic pregnancy. The Think Ectopic campaign and its resources provide essential tools to help paramedics identify symptoms, act promptly, and ensure patients receive the care they need without delay.”
We are delighted to have the support of the College of Paramedics, which helps further our mission to raise awareness and improve the timely diagnosis and treatment of ectopic pregnancies.
